It's a short post from your old pal WG tonight. Darren and I are headed to the Dakota Jazz club in downtown Minneapolis to see a Mavis Staples concert. Ooh, I love me some Mavis! She is one soulful mama. I have been a fan since the late '80s, when some college friends kept playing the Staple Singers' "I'll Take You There," off the Children of a Lesser God soundtrack. Shortly thereafter, Mavis hooked up with Prince and released two really good CDs on his Paisely Park label. (Amazing--a female Prince "protege" who could actually SING and didn't look like a hooker!)
I haven't heard Mavis' most recent CD, but it has received rave reviews. NPR also did a charming interview with her recently. I've always loved her vivacious personality and hearty laugh. She also has the deepest speaking voice of any woman I have every heard. If you don't know her work, you should check her out. I suggest starting here or here.
Keepin' it old school,
